The strong link between gum disease and heart disease- here's the evidence...

Updated: May 21, 2020

A new study has confirmed what dentists have believed for years, that periodontitis , a form of gum disease, has a clear and definite link with calcification of the carotid artery and heart disease. Researchers at Malmo university have new evidence to confirm these findings. " It is clear that people with periodontitis are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and also have an increased risk of dying" said Wallin Bengtsson.

Bengtsson worked with a dental specialist and studied the relationship between atherosclerosis and periodontitis and whether calcification seen in x-rays over 13 years are associated with the onset of stroke and/or cardiovascular disease.

Bengtsson also explored whether individuals with periodontists were at greater risk is ischaemic stroke or death during a follow up period of 17 years .

Bengtsston emphasised the importance of dentists carefully analysing OPG xrays since the inflammation that occurs in connection with periodontitis can lead to fat deposits and plaque in other parts of the body . #periodontitis #dentist #dentalcare #heartdisease #cardiovasculardisease #stroke #dentalspeciliast #northumberlanddentalcare #gingivitis
