Which is better - an electric or a manual toothbrush?

Updated: Jun 2, 2020

This is a question that we, at Northumberland Dental Care are asked daily. Finally, we can confirm that electric toothbrushes are indeed better for your gums and teeth according to the findings of a groundbreaking new study.

This research tooth 11 years to complete and over 2,800 patients were examined. It is the longest study of its kind into the long term effectiveness of electric versus manual toothbrushes

This study backs up what smaller studies have previously suggested and what we as dental professional have long suspected.

The most popular electric toothbrushes that we see the best results in are Oral B and Philips Sonicare ranges . Spotlight have a nice, new electric sonic toothbrush also on the market . As technologies develop, they are becoming a better investment than even with affordable ranges constantly coming on the marker. The oscillating head of electric toothbrush is highly effective in removing plaque and reducing bleeding gums.

Whether or not you use an electric or manual toothbrush to clean your teeth, it is vitally important, to brush twice a day for 2 minutes each session with a flouridated toothbrush. Change the head on your toothbrush when the bristles splay and visit your dentist regularly!
