How to maintain a beautiful, healthy smile


There are many ways to maintain a beautiful, health smile. Some of these include a healthy, low sugar diet, excellent dental hygiene, use of fluoride toothpaste, and regular attendances with your dentist and hygienist.

A healthy diet is crucial to a healthy smile. Sugar causes caries (dental decay) by feeding the bacteria in dental plaque. which in turns produces and acid which dissolves tooth tissue. Also, it's the frequency of sugar intake which is detrimental to our teeth. Avoid, fizzy, sugary drinks. Do not add sugar to you daily tea of coffee. Be mindful of the hidden sugars in various foodstuffs, e.g. breakfast cereals, tomato ketchup, fruit juices and beverages with high acid e.g. "diet" drinks.

Excellent dental hygiene is paramount to keeping a healthy smile. Brushing twice a day with an electric toothbrush and a flouride toothpaste is key. Flossing daily is very advantageous.

Regular appointments with your dentist and hygienist means that a dental professional can monitor your dental cleaning and gingival (gum) health, take regular xrays if necessary and hopefully catch dental decay early to help prevent problems and to maintain a health smile.
