Tooth grinding in children is a surprisingly common occurrence.
Research has shown that grinding in children is linked to asthma, upper respiratory infections and anxiety disorders.
It has also been suggested in the literature, that children may commence grinding their teeth as a natural response to pain. These episodes are usually temporary , like when the child is teething or has a earache. This typically subsides when the pain or problems goes. Children with an aggressive, competitive or hyperactivity disorder may also be prone to bruxism (tooth grinding).
Night guards are not recommended in children, however yoga and exercise have been found to be beneficial for children who grind. Of course , a healthy, well balanced diet is also very important , avoiding any foods that may trigger an allergic reaction.
Multi vitamins are also recommended to help reduce anxiety in children (magnesium, vitamin C and Vitamin B are particularly important) and which hopefully will help reduce grinding long term.
